Best AI marketing agencies: how to choose one without trusting a top 10 list
Search for the best AI marketing agencies and you'll get a page of "top 10" lists. Most of them look independent. Very few are. Some are paid placements, where agencies buy their spot. Some are published by an agency that, by coincidence, ranks itself first. Some were written by someone who never spoke to a single client of the agencies they rank.
I'm not going to give you another list. I'm going to give you the tests I'd use if I were hiring an AI marketing agency for my own business, so you can run them on anyone, including me.
Why "top AI marketing companies" lists don't help much
A list can't know your business. The best AI digital marketing company for a national software brand is a poor choice for a dental practice in one neighbourhood, and the reverse is also true. A ranking that ignores who you are and what you sell is ranking something other than fit.
There's also the question of who wrote it. Before you trust a list, check three things: whether the publisher sells marketing services itself, whether the page says entries are sponsored, and whether any of the claims link to evidence you can check. If all three come back empty, treat the list as advertising.
Seven tests a real AI marketing agency passes
"AI-based marketing agency" now describes almost everyone, because adding the words costs nothing. These tests separate the agencies that changed how they work from the ones that changed their homepage.
| Test | What a good answer looks like |
|---|---|
| 1. Measures AI answers | Shows you what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews say about you now, and tracks the same prompts monthly |
| 2. Publishes prices | You can see what things cost before the third sales call |
| 3. Reports in revenue | The monthly report starts with enquiries, customers and revenue, not impressions |
| 4. Explains the AI | Says plainly what AI does in the work and what people still decide |
| 5. Protects your voice | AI drafts, people edit, and nothing goes out that sounds like everyone else |
| 6. Follows up leads | Can show how enquiries get answered in minutes, not the next day |
| 7. One accountable person | You know who sets the strategy and who answers for the results |
Test one matters most. An agency that helps you get found in AI answers but has never checked what those answers say about you is guessing. Ask them to run the check in front of you.
Red flags
Be careful with anyone who promises a guaranteed ranking or a set number of AI mentions. Nobody controls what an AI model says, and honest agencies won't pretend otherwise.
Be careful with plans built on volume: hundreds of AI-written pages, daily posts nobody reads, or a content calendar with no reason behind each item. More output was cheap to promise before AI. Now it's nearly free, which is exactly why it isn't worth paying for on its own.
And be careful with reports full of activity. If you can't connect the report to customers, you're paying for motion. My piece on how to tell if a marketing agency is working goes through what to look for.
Questions to ask before you sign
What does ChatGPT say about my business today, and what will you do to change it? Which parts of the work does AI do, and which does a person check? What will the monthly report show, and which number tells me it's working? Who exactly is responsible for my account? What does it cost, and what happens if I want to stop?
A good agency answers all five without hesitating. If you're still deciding whether you need an agency or advice first, AI consultant vs AI agency covers the difference.
"AI marketing agency near me": does local matter?
Less than it used to. Strategy calls, reporting and almost all of the work run well over video, and the agency down the street isn't automatically better than one across the country.
Local knowledge still helps in two cases: when your customers are local and the agency understands your market, and when you value meeting in person. I'm based in Los Angeles and meet clients there, and I work with businesses across the United States online. If you're in LA, AI marketing in Los Angeles covers how that works.
Where my agency fits, honestly
My AI marketing agency is consultant-led, not a large firm. I set the strategy and review every deliverable, and AI handles the volume and speed. The prices are published: AI Visibility Launch is $2,500 one-time, AI Visibility Growth is $1,500 a month, an AI-Ready Website starts at $4,500, a Done-For-You AI Agent is $3,500 plus $1,000 a month, and the Content Engine is $1,200 a month. You can buy them on the agency page.
It isn't the right fit if you need a large team on site every day, if you want hundreds of pages produced to game search, or if you won't share results data. In those cases a different kind of agency will serve you better, and I'd rather tell you now.

Common questions
What are the best AI marketing agencies?
There isn't one list that's right for every business. The best AI marketing agency for you is one that measures what AI assistants say about your business, publishes its prices, reports in enquiries and revenue, and has one person accountable for your results. Run the seven tests in this article on any agency you're considering.
Are "top AI marketing companies" lists trustworthy?
Treat them with caution. Many are paid placements or are published by an agency that lists itself. Check whether the publisher sells marketing services, whether entries are marked as sponsored, and whether claims link to evidence you can verify.
What makes a marketing agency AI-based?
A real AI-based marketing agency uses AI throughout the work, for research, content, ads, follow-up and measurement, and also helps you get recommended in AI answers. Using AI to write blog posts faster isn't enough on its own.
Do I need an AI marketing agency near me?
Not usually. Most of the work runs online, so fit and evidence matter more than distance. Local knowledge helps if your customers are local or you want to meet in person. I'm based in Los Angeles and work with clients nationwide.
