The Long View / Hiring Help

What a full-service digital marketing agency should actually do for you

"Full service" is one of the most elastic phrases in marketing. I've seen it on the websites of global firms with hundreds of staff and on two-person shops that resell someone else's ad management. Both are telling the truth by their own definition. That's the problem.

So before you hire a full service digital marketing agency, it helps to know what the phrase should mean, what it tends to cost, and what to watch for.

What "full service" should include

At minimum, a full-service agency should cover the parts of marketing a small business actually needs:

  • Strategy. Who you sell to, what you say and where the budget goes.
  • Website. A site that turns visitors into calls, bookings or sales.
  • Search. Google rankings, local listings and, now, being named in AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews.
  • Content. Pages, articles and posts that answer what your customers ask.
  • Paid media, email and social, where they make sense for your business.
  • Reporting that starts with enquiries and revenue.

The first item is the one that gets skipped. Many agencies are full-service in production and empty in strategy. They'll happily run every channel, but nobody senior decides which channels deserve to exist.

What "integrated" adds

An integrated marketing agency plans the channels together. The ad, the landing page, the follow-up email and the AI answer all say the same thing to the same customer. That sounds obvious. It's rare, because most agencies are organised by department, and departments optimise their own numbers.

Integration is worth paying for. A message that's consistent everywhere converts better, and it's also what AI systems need to describe your business accurately. When your website, directories and reviews disagree, the AI either guesses or picks a competitor.

What it costs

Agencies price in very different ways, so I won't quote an industry average I can't back up. What I can do is show you how I price, so you have one real reference point.

My done-for-you packages, as published on the pricing page
PackagePrice
AI Visibility Launch$2,500 one-time
AI Visibility Growth$1,500 a month
AI-Ready Websitefrom $4,500
Done-For-You AI Agent$3,500 setup plus $1,000 a month
Content Engine$1,200 a month

To be clear about what I am: my done-for-you agency is consultant-led, not a large firm. I set the strategy and review every deliverable. You buy at a fixed price online instead of signing a long retainer. If you need a team of twenty people across every channel, a bigger agency is the better fit, and I'll tell you so.

Red flags before you sign

A long contract before any results. A good agency can show progress within a defined first period. A twelve-month lock-in protects the agency, not you.

Reports full of activity. Impressions, reach, posts published. Ask what happened to enquiries and sales.

No named senior person. If the person who sold you isn't the person who thinks about your account, the strategy goes with them.

Every channel recommended at once. A small business rarely needs seven channels. It needs two or three done properly.

Nothing about AI search. Customers now ask AI assistants who to hire. An agency that doesn't measure what AI says about you is working on last decade's problem. See GEO and AEO.

A simpler alternative

If you're not sure you need a full-service agency, start smaller. Get a diagnosis first, then buy only the parts that matter. A paid strategy hour is $350, or start with the free website audit. If you already have an agency and doubt it, read how to tell if it's working.

Common questions

Is a full-service digital marketing agency worth it for a small business?
It can be, if someone senior still sets the strategy and the reports tie the work to enquiries and sales. Without that, you pay for a lot of activity that never connects to revenue.

What's the difference between a full-service agency and an integrated marketing agency?
Full service describes the range of work offered. Integrated describes how it's planned: one strategy and one message across every channel. You want both, and integration matters more.

Are you a full-service digital marketing agency?
In practice, consultant-led rather than a large firm. I set the strategy and review every deliverable, and the fixed-price packages cover AI visibility, AI-ready websites, AI agents and content.

How do I compare agency proposals?
Ask each one what result they'll be measured on, who senior will run your account, how long the contract is and how they'll cover AI search. A paid hour with an independent consultant to review the proposals is often the cheapest insurance you can buy.
