Business growth consultant or business development consultant: which comes first?
When sales stall, owners search for help in a dozen different ways: business growth consultant, business development consultant, small business consultant, business strategy advisor. The titles overlap, and the people behind them use them loosely. But the jobs are different, and hiring the wrong one first is expensive.
Four titles, four jobs
| Title | Focus | Hire when |
|---|---|---|
| Business growth consultant | The whole chain: positioning, marketing, conversion, follow-up, measurement | Revenue is flat and you can't say why |
| Business development consultant | New opportunities: partnerships, new markets, the sales pipeline | The basics work and you want new channels of revenue |
| Small business consultant | A broad generalist for owner-led firms | You need one experienced outsider across many issues |
| Business strategy advisor | Big decisions: markets, pricing, new services | You're about to commit to something hard to undo |
In practice one person often covers more than one of these. I work across all four. But it helps to know which job you're hiring for, because it changes what you should ask for.
Why growth usually comes before development
Business development brings in new opportunities. If your business turns opportunities into customers well, that's exactly what you want. If it doesn't, new opportunities pour into the same leaks: slow replies, a confusing website, an offer nobody quite understands, no follow-up after the first call.
That's why I start with the chain, not the pipeline. My S.C.A.L.E. Framework™ runs in order: Scan where you really stand, Clarify who you serve and why they should choose you, Amplify the channels that reach them, Leverage automation and AI, and Evaluate monthly in revenue. Skipping a step is the most common reason growth plans fail.
I wrote about the underlying pattern in why businesses fail on strategy, not product. You can't optimise your way out of a bad strategy.
When a small business consultant is the right call
Owner-led businesses rarely have one problem. Marketing, pricing, hiring, systems and the owner's own time are all tangled together. A small business consultant who has seen many businesses can untangle them and set an order.
The risk with a generalist is breadth without depth. Ask what they've actually built or grown, and ask to see it. Mine is public: an eight-year engagement that grew Blue Moon Fabrics from one LA Fashion District store into a national textile leader.
When you need a business strategy advisor
Some moments call for a second opinion before you commit: a new location, a new market, a price increase, a big hire, a new service line. A business strategy advisor gives you an honest outside view at that moment, which is usually much cheaper than a year spent recovering from the wrong decision.
That's often a single paid strategy hour ($350) rather than an engagement.
What to ask before you hire
What will you look at first? A good answer starts with your numbers, not their service menu.
What will I have in my hand at the end? A written plan with priorities, owners and dates, not a slide deck.
How will we know it worked? Revenue, margin and enquiries, measured monthly.
What would you tell me not to do? If the answer is nothing, keep looking.

Common questions
What does a business growth consultant do?
A business growth consultant finds what is limiting your revenue and builds the plan to remove it: positioning, target customers, marketing channels, the path from enquiry to sale and measurement.
Do I need a business development consultant?
Only once your existing enquiries reliably turn into customers. Before that, new opportunities leak through the same gaps, so fix the chain first and then add new sources of business.
What is a small business consultant?
A small business consultant is an experienced generalist who helps owner-led firms with the issues that limit growth, usually marketing, sales, pricing and systems, and sets the order in which to fix them.
How much does a business growth consultant cost?
My first 30-minute call is free, a paid strategy hour is $350 and hourly consulting is $350 to $450. Larger engagements are quoted after a diagnostic. See pricing.
