The Long View / Strategy

Brand strategy vs brand positioning, and whether you need a consultant or an agency

Owners often use "brand strategy" and "brand positioning" as if they mean the same thing, and then hire someone to design a logo when what they needed was a decision. The two terms are related, but they aren't interchangeable, and mixing them up is expensive.

Here is the difference, and how to decide whether you need a brand consultant or a branding and marketing agency.

Positioning: the one decision everything rests on

Positioning answers a single question: when a customer compares you with the alternatives, why should they pick you? The answer has to be specific, believable and different from what your competitors claim.

"Quality service at a fair price" is not positioning. Every competitor says it. Positioning is narrower and braver: who you are for, who you are not for, and the one thing you do better than anyone they could choose instead.

Without it, customers choose on price, because price is the only difference they can see.

Brand strategy: everything built on that decision

Brand strategy takes the positioning and makes it usable across the business. It covers the audience you're serving, the message hierarchy, the personality and voice, the proof that backs up your claims, the name if there isn't one yet, and the rules that keep all of it consistent.

Why this now matters to AI as well as people

AI assistants describe businesses using the facts they find across the web. If your website, profiles and listings describe you in five slightly different ways, the assistant has to guess, and it often guesses wrong or leaves you out.

A clear position, said the same way everywhere, is exactly what lets AI systems describe you correctly and recommend you for the right questions. A fuzzy brand costs you twice: with buyers and with the systems that increasingly decide what buyers see. I cover this on my brand creation page.

Brand consultant or branding and marketing agency?

A brand strategy consultant, or brand positioning consultant, helps you make the decisions: who you're for, why you win, what you say. The output is a strategy you can hand to anyone.

A branding and marketing agency turns decisions into assets: logo, visual identity, website, packaging, campaigns. The output is the things people see.

The question is which you're missing. If customers can already say why you're different and you need it to look the part, an agency fits. If customers can't say why you're different, start with the strategy, because a beautiful identity on an unclear position still loses on price.

Many businesses need both, in that order. The mistake is reversing it: commissioning a new logo to fix a positioning problem, then wondering why nothing changed.

Signs your problem is positioning, not design

Customers ask for discounts as if you were interchangeable. Your best people describe the business differently from one another. Your website could belong to any competitor if you swapped the name. Referrals come in, but new customers don't.

Each of these points to the decision, not the visuals. I've written about the price version of this in Why Can't I Raise My Prices Without Losing Customers?

What I do

I build brands from the positioning outward: the name if needed, the position, the message and the rules, then the identity on top. I've created brands from a blank page, including Orchamind, AisleBird and ResBizAI, and helped take Blue Moon Fabrics from one store to a national leader.

Short answers to the common questions are in the knowledge base. If you're not sure which problem you have, a free 30-minute call is usually enough to tell.

Common questions

What does a brand strategy consultant do?
A brand strategy consultant defines what a business stands for, who it's for and why customers should choose it, then turns that into a name, a message, a voice and rules everyone can follow. The visual identity comes after the strategy, not before it.

What does a brand positioning consultant do?
A brand positioning consultant works on one decision: the specific place you want to hold in the customer's mind compared with the alternatives. The result is a position that is specific, believable and different from what competitors claim.

Do I need a branding and marketing agency?
If your position is clear and you need a logo, identity, website and materials, yes. If customers can't say why you're different, start with strategy first. An agency can then design around a decision instead of guessing at one.

How much does brand strategy cost?
My consulting is $350 to $450 an hour, with brand projects quoted after a first conversation about scope. Every published price is on the pricing page.
